Rise of the GoogNet — Part 2

Few days back I wrote about the rise of Google as a network provider and their offer to the FCC. Read it here.

This is the second installment of the article. Continuing on their path of strategic moves within wireless, they made another announcement today. Google is partnering with Sprint to deliver WiMax services

GoogNet Hearts Sprint logo

On the first glance this doesn’t look much as the press release only mentions that Google will offer search services on the WiMax devices. However this is just the begining.

Those of you, who have looked into WiMax know that its just not about mobile phones any more. Sprint and Clearwire plan to enable the “Any Device” model. This allows Sprint to leverage other OEM markets as well. However the kicker is that with Google partnership they can truly deliver the “Any Device, Any Application” model.

With this approach and Google’s mentality one can see their services on pretty much any device. Set-top boxes, laptops, appliances you name it. Anything that can have a WiMax chip will now be hooked to the GoogNet.

This is just another step in the bigger direction for Google and they have just begun. I am sure next few quarters hold a lot. Let me know what you all think. I will be closely tracking this and run this article as a series as and when I stumble upon new information.

Note: Verizon is also trying to get on the bandwagon. They are trying to be friends with Google too.
